Professional Interior Design Organization

As an interior designer whether an employee or the owner of the design practice, there are certain thing that must be followed related to this profession responsibility. This is similar as us being a citizen in a country and we should follow the rules that the law in the country has made, and if someone break it, punishment await.


The rules you should follow will be depend on the organization that you join but mostly it has the same essence for all organization. Furthermore, this society is where you can built your networking and also helping each other to growth the potential to be a professional designer. Long story short, here are some of the organizations that you could join and a bit of explanation.

American Society of Interior Design

ASID is like the grandfather in interior design community. It is founded in 1975 and it’s actually based in America and it has 48 office branches throughout of it. The member consist of designers, industry representatives, educators, and students of interior design. All members should pass the requirement of education, experience, and examination. They also should obey the code of ethic that applicable without exception. The code of ethic consist of 6 responsibilities which are responsibility to public, client, other interior designers & colleagues, profession, employer, enforcement.


By joining this organization, you can be included in employment opportunities list that available to all interested employers. There are also awards programs, and for students, they can join the competition held by ASID and receive the scholarship.

Interior Design Confederation Singapore

IDCS is based in the country where I learn interior design. IDCS is established in 2003 and registered under Singapore law. This organization is form by combining 2 groups which are Interior Designers Association and the Society of Interior Designers (Singapore) where they had same goals & objectives. Furthermore, it has become the member of APSDA and IFI. Besides that, they also have close connection with government departments, institution, and neighboring association.


As a non-profit organization, it still facilitate their members, it can be seen on their vision of goal towards the success for their member. What you can expect from this organization are that they want to give their member a better understanding of the profession itself. Also, as I stated before, it can increase your networking which impact to the raise of members’ profile. Next, as you will meet a lot of person, the level of professionalism is increased, it will effect on the way you see other professional, your client, and your business. Lastly, as everyone will have their own story, problems, and difficulty during their practice, and you can share and advise each other so that you have the knowledge when those certain things happen.


IDCS is open for professional, corporate, and students. To disobey the rules may effect on retraction of your title as interior designers.

Indonesian Society of Interior Designers

As I’m from Indonesia, I will be explain about the organization in my country. HDII or Indonesian Society of Interior Designers is an interior design organization that based in Indonesia. It is founded by Hoemar Tjokrodiatmo, Fred Haradiran, and Maya Soeharnoko on 17th January 1983. HDII has been recognized by IFI (International Federation of Interior Architect) since 1985 and in regional level, also registered as a member of APSDA (Asia Pacific Space Designers Association) from 1989. In 2014, HDII has 11 subdivision from different cities in Indonesia which is DKI Jakarta, Bandung, Yogyakarta, Solo, Surabaya, Bali, Makassar, Padang, Medan, Pekanbaru, and Riau.


What you can expect from this organization is you can interact with other people with same profession which also effect to extend your network and knowledge if you want to develop business in this country. You can also express your idea and thought to higher up the level of the organization and provide yourself chance to boost your profession.
